First Ultralight Pack Under 10 lbs. / Centennial Trail Black hills / Part 2
Hiking through one of the most epic sections on the Centennial Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The day after Runner's rain jacket wetted out. Leaving him with soaked clothes underneath. With temperatures close to freezing. Leading him to go into hyperthermia. With the rain passing. It's time to do some serious hiking. And we sure did. The trail is challenging. The scenery is breathtaking. Making the Centennial one of the most beautiful trails in the world. If you disagree. Then check out this episode.

    Question, you said you needed to adjust the UQ. If one side of the hammock is sewn how do you adjust the quilt?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine День тому

      Great Question. I will grab the hammock fabric against the under quilt and move the under quilt. Ounce the shock cord is over my feet. And with the 3/4 length adjusted on its own shock cord suspension to fit my hammock. Then I never have to worry about the foot end. That end almost always stay in place. I just have to only adjust it over my shoulder.

    A friend worked as a park ranger here 2 different summers. As a full time teacher it was a fun summer job. Once she was ask to do a lesson plan & activities for a very small special group. She made badges & prepared activities. In came like 15 really big RVs she thought it was perhaps Pres. Obama & family. Turned out it was a Ted Turner & his family. The parents wouldn’t let her pin the badges on as it might poke them. The kids stayed in the RVs on their phones & playing video games. The parents didn’t won’t them out & about because someone could kidnap them. Turner & his young 20 something girlfriend rode on horses w/ park authorities to see about bringing back the buffalo on an original path from early years. Guess he’s doing good conservation. But the adults & kids were not even looking at the beauty.

Was looking at the kingsize Ticket to the moon version, but 90 inches wide seemed a bit too much? Very svelte! And a good presentation too. If you need to carry more but don't enjoy the belly band much, like me -- you might consider a decent hip bag like the Savotta Askare 7L. With or without using the PALS webbing, it can carry heavier small items and even a small tent, leaving my 30L vest harness shoulder pack for bulky, lightweight items. The weight can quickly be taken off your shoulders by resting the upper pack on the lower "shelf" -- and the weight on your hips never shows up on the shoulders!

    Wool is not environmentally friendly. Sheep need land, feed, yes they don't just eat grass. It needs chemicals to dye, preserve and protect. The land they live on would be forest normally but they stop forests returning and that's before we start on methane and faeces in the water supply. Down is barbar8c watch a few videos on how they make it. Also that down jacket is down stuffed in a synthetic bag anyway.

      With an ultralight pack. It is more comfortable not to use the waist belt. And only use the shoulder straps. Buy once the weight goes over 15 lbs. ( for me ). Then it is time to put on the waist belt. Plus taking off and put on the pack was so much easier and of course faster. Thank you Lukaass for watching. I really appreciate it.

      The most important thing on a trip is water. A unreliable water filter will destroy that trip. Now I know why they only distribute Sawyer Water Filters through out the world. thank you J3hikes for sharing that. I really appreciate it.

      @@AdventureswiththeMarine Oh man this is worrying, I'm doing a trip right in the heat dome with one of those this week! I had no problems with the wetting process when I first got it and another quick test of it just now. Either way, my buds will have sawyers just in case. Thanks for the tips!

    Good Morning Marine!! great video - lots of great info for those of us "older" persons looking to shed some weight when hiking about. "Bestest" part though IMHO was when you said "...and the cap, I didn't lose my cap" as the cap you placed down on the table rolled off the table. Perfect cinematography moment captured for YT.(‾◡◝)

      When my wife watched it. She totally missed it. Then I thought I should of looked down and said ahhhhh... Or have done a close up of it rolling off the table. But you can clearly see it and hear it hit the table and roll off. Thank you Ken for catching that. I hope other will catch that.

    The bags are ok but my ziplocks are see thru, cheap & work. Those Sandlers make me smile but really if you wear those you must have a ggg ul titanium one hitter or ty cob pipe. I’d be willing to bet Runner has one 😂😂😂 Like your closing music.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine 8 днів тому

      That is funny. I have been eye balling that. And that titanium funnel for my flask that Runner gave me. Both from the same company. I love ggg. Ever since Midwest Mountaineering move out. Now that is my favorite store. Only a half an hour from my house. If i want to pick it up the same day.

    What does the skirt do?

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine 8 днів тому

      Nothing worst than wearing rain pants when hiking. Especially crossing a river. Like we did three times on that trip. The rain pants cause overheating and restriction on your strid when hiking a good pace. Plus they eventually cause chaffing. With the rain kilt. ( skirt ) Only the bottom of your pants below the knees will get wet. But if wearing shorts. That would not matter. Great air flow so no over heating. ( sweating ) And with the legs free and open. You still can have a great strid with no restriction. No chaffing. Part two is coming out next Tuesday from our trip on the Centennial Trial. You will be able to see them in action. thank you Snodebbs for watching. I really appreciate it.

    Little trick with the Sawyer squeeze: I fit their inline adapter on the outflow of the filter, and it pops right into the Smartwater sportscap for a no spill filtration😁. My luxury item: Onewind’s Gear hammock, makes for a very neat rest for snacks plus an off ground backpack and shoe storage at night under my hammock

    Interesting…very advanced in fact! Hi from UK. I attach a pair of crocs rather than flip flops using a piece of para cord and a climbing clip to the outside of my rucksack. Also a Nitecore head torch and a small Nitecore torch which lasts 2.5 hours at 200 lumen. I am not an expert like you though.

    • @AdventureswiththeMarine
      @AdventureswiththeMarine 9 днів тому

      I am no expert. I am always learning to be a little better. The Crocs are the best camp shoes by far. I even use them to portage the canoe with a pack on my back. From lake to lake in the Boundary Waters. Thank you Hamwhacker for watching. I really appreciate it.

      😂😂😂😂never shake the hand of a lightweight on trail! Best advise ever. I seldom watch gear reviews but love your channel & haven’t watched in awhile. I’m familiar w/ all the gear & use my trusty cheap see-thru ziplocks. Those sandals tough 😂 I think anybody wearing those has to be simultaneously smoking a bowl in GGG titanium one hitter or pipe w/ short or long stem. A new look for you - add a pony tail & slowdown a bit. Runners there. 😂
